Job Introduction

As a Bilingual Assistant, you will help children and young people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) heritages in Hampshire schools, including those learning English as an Additional Language (EAL), to improve their educational outcomes and wellbeing.  This may include working with children and young people who are refugees/Separated Minors (UASC).

You will use your bilingual skills to support pupils in all school phases from Reception to Year 11.  In groups and on a one-to-one basis, you will support them to access the mainstream curriculum and to realise their aspirations for their futures.  Your support will help them engage in their education, raise their attainment and ensure that the children’s cultures and languages are valued in school.

Acting as an interpreter for parental discussions, you will also advise teachers of pupils’ first language development and ability. This will include informing teachers of areas where the children may require additional support, for example if they are experiencing the impact of trauma, racist abuse or bullying.
