Job/Person Summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our friendly school as our caretaker. We are looking for a dedicated, reliable, enthusiastic person who is committed to keeping children and staff safe and who will be as passionate as us about the presentation of our school. 

The role will include maintaining clean, safe premises including the school building and grounds. This will entail preventative maintenance and repair work, promoting health and safety (e.g. as Fire Safety Officer), undertake statutory checks (e.g. legionella testing, fire alarm testing), COSHH responsibility, managing the cleaning team and cleaning as required. The Caretaker will also be the main key holder with responsibility for school security.

 

We are looking for someone who can work in partnership with the school team to:

  • Manage the school site, grounds and buildings
  • Take responsibility for site security
  • Ensure the school is unlocked and locked daily, carrying out security and safety checks; there may also be a requirement to open and close the school outside the core hours
  • Arrange and supervise contractors on site
  • Work in a flexible manner for the needs of the children and school
  • Share our school values and ethos
  • Be skilled in routine building maintenance – have basic DIY skills including plumbing, painting and carpentry
  • Have some experience, or knowledge, of Health and Safety in the workplace
  • Be able to lead and manage the cleaning team
  • Be flexible, able to prioritise workload and to work under own initiative 
  • Be able to use IT to support the role e.g. emails, Microsoft word, spreadsheets
  • Be organised and diligent ensuring statutory checks are completed on time and accurately

Desirable Skills

  • Experience in a school setting
  • Experience of caretaking and buildings maintenance and security
  • Good knowledge of security, heating plant and other building systems
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety
  • Ability to draw up work specifications in collaboration with colleagues to address maintenance/improvement/health and safety requirements/statutory compliance
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of effective systems to share information
  • Understand procedures and legislation relating to confidentiality
  • Understand and implement child protection procedures
  • Demonstrate ability to resolve complex problems independently
  • Ability to manage difficult or controversial exchanges
  • Ability to effectively evaluate own performance
