Caretaker

Job Introduction

We are looking for someone enthusiastic and energetic to become part of our school team, with a strong sense of pride in their work. At Mill Hill, we have very high standards and expectations of the children and ourselves. We care about our school and believe that every person within it has an important role in achieving those high standards.

This is a very important post to the school with a surprisingly big site to manage. The role requires someone with flexibility, good organisational skills and initiative, who is able to work as part of a team. We are looking for someone with good practical skills and a strong awareness of safe working practices. You will need to be able to work independently, as well as communicate effectively with members of the school community, and take responsibility for the school site, keeping the building safe, secure and clean. You must be willing to attend training and develop professional skills. Ideally, you will also have a full, clean driving licence. The role includes the following;

  • Supporting the safe and efficient running of the school
  • Responsibility for site security, including some closing of the school, as well as outside of normal school hours for school events if required
  • As the principal key holder, being the first point of contact for our keyholding and alarm response service provider, in the event of site-related emergencies
  • Regular checking and record keeping in relation to Health and Safety procedures, including fire safety, risk assessment, COSHH, legionella etc.
  • Undertaking general DIY and repairs to the school, property and premises
  • Liaising with other HCC departments and contractors and managing programmes of planned, reactive and preventative maintenance
  • Monitoring the highest standards of cleanliness throughout the school, undertaking ad-hoc cleaning tasks as required and liaising with and supervising the cleaning staff
  • Monitoring cleaning stock and ordering supplies.

The working pattern is negotiable, but we will require approximately 30 hours per week to be worked.

We would ideally like the successful candidate to start with us on Monday 20th April 2026, but understand that a notice period may need to be worked before taking up the post.
