Rachel Madocks Special School is a co-educational day school for 107 pupils aged 2 -19 with severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties and complex medical needs, near to Waterlooville.

We are currently recruiting for a Co-opted Governors to join our friendly governing body, drawn from members of the local community. Their important role is to support the excellent work of the school, be a critical friend and ensure we become ‘outstanding’. We usually meet at school at 5pm. There is now the opportunity for Governors to attend a meeting virtually, if they are unable to attend a particular meeting in person. You would be expected to attend approximately 8 meetings annually.


Job/Person Summary


  • Governing bodies have a strong focus of three core strategic functions: Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and direction
  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of the staff
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent 
  • Each individual governor is a member of a governing body and all decisions are the joint responsibility of the governing body
  • No one governor is not expected to know it all.  The strength of a governing body lies in its ability to attract and rely upon members from a wide variety of backgrounds, sharing out the duties amongst its members, and be able to take decisions as a group
  • Team work and ability to offer professional discussion
