Finance Officer

Job Introduction

Bishop’s Waltham Junior School is seeking a highly organised, reliable and skilled Finance Officer to join our committed and supportive team. This is a key role within the school, providing high‑quality financial and administrative support and contributing directly to the effective management of school resources.


About the role

The Finance Officer will play a central role in ensuring the smooth and effective financial operation of the school. Working closely with the Headteacher, Governors and senior leaders, the postholder will provide financial planning, monitoring, accounting and administrative support to meet the needs of the school and ensure compliance with Local Authority and statutory requirements.

This role requires a high level of accuracy, confidentiality and initiative, along with strong communication skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.


Start date = Monday 13th April 2026 

(successful candidate will have opportunity to shadow current Finance Officer prior to start date if circumstance permits)


Key responsibilities (For full details - please refer to the job description)

  • Support the Headteacher in preparing, managing and monitoring the school’s annual budget
  • Manage the day‑to‑day operation of the school’s finance systems
  • Prepare forecasts, financial reports and management accounts for senior leaders and Governors
  • Process and authorise payments, invoices, wage and expense claims
  • Maintain accurate financial records, including petty cash, unofficial funds and banking
  • Administer procurement processes, ensuring best value and compliance with school and LA procedures
  • Attend Governors’ Finance Committee meetings in an advisory capacity, as required
  • Maintain inventory and oversee stock control and annual stock takes
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety, financial regulations and audit requirements
  • Provide administrative support for the Headteacher during the recruitment, interviews, appointments and other general personnel procedures for staff.
  • Process HR and payroll‑related documentation, including appointments and changes to contracts
  • Maintain an up to date Single Central record for all staff and volunteers at BWJS – including carrying out relevant DBS checks.
  • Oversee all of the bookings, lettings and subsequent contract agreements forms from private hirers.

 

What we are looking for

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • Is educated to GCSE level or equivalent, including English and Maths
  • Has financial experience, ideally within a school or public sector environment
  • Is confident using IT systems, including Word, Excel and financial software
  • Has experience of budget monitoring, forecasting and financial reporting
  • Demonstrates excellent organisational, communication and problem‑solving skills
  • Can work on their own initiative, manage competing priorities and meet deadlines
  • Understands the need for confidentiality and accuracy at all times
  • Has (or is working towards) an AAT qualification (desirable)
