Key Responsibilities - Learning Support Assistant

  • To meet the physical and emotional needs of the children in the class.
  • To work with groups of pupils, as designated by the Class Teacher, supporting learning needs across all areas of the curriculum, both on the school site and on organised curriculum based off-site visits, helping all children to gain the best from their education.
  • To liaise with the Class Teacher to ensure that the support role in planned activities is clearly understood and that the desired learning outcome is attained.
  • To work with groups of children or individual children on Individual Education Plan activities and to provide feedback to the Class Teacher.
  • To participate in consultations with parents of children, school support staff and external support agencies, when so required
  • To assist the Class Teacher in the assessments required for each child and maintain records that are required by the school and Class Teacher.
  • To assist the Class Teacher in the planning and preparation of teaching materials, including photocopying.
  • To assist in enhancing the school environment by displaying the children’s work and important information in an effective and eye-catching way.
  • To assist the Class Teacher in maintaining a tidy, safe and stimulating environment.
  • To provide a positive role model for the children, adhering to the code of dress, maintaining professional relationships and upholding all aspects of the school ethos and behaviour policy.
  • To be aware and comply with policies and procedures relating to safeguarding, Child Protection, Health, Safety and Security, Confidential and Data Protection, Behaviour and Anti-Bullying, reporting all concerns to the appropriate person.
  • To ensure that all children are treated fairly and given equal access to learning opportunities.
  • To deal with inappropriate behaviour in line with the school’s behaviour policy.
  • To participate annually in the performance management process, setting and reviewing targets that maintain high levels of achievement and promote high standards.
  • To undertake such training as may be specified by the Headteacher and SENCo in order to extend skills, knowledge and understanding of aspects of the role.
  • To engage with and support children in the playground during break and lunch as required.
  • To undertake the post with positivity and enthusiasm, putting children at the heart of the role.

Key Responsibilities - Lunchtime Supervisor (Monday to Friday: 25 minutes per day)

  1. To ensure that all children have lunch, and to report to the Senior Midday Supervisor any child who frequently has an inadequate lunch or has any other problems or difficulties.
  2. To provide pastoral care, for the children, during the lunchtime period. 
  3. To be aware of the school Behaviour Management Policy and to promote this within the school and to be responsible for the conduct of the children during lunchtime.
  4. To provide a friendly point of contact for the children, while also helping to ensure a good standard of behaviour by being firm and fair in dealings with children whenever necessary.
  5. To administer first aid and medicines, as necessary, during the lunch hour and to care for children who are unwell.
  6. To help organise and supervise games/play at lunchtime with children in different groups.
  7. To report any racial incidents to the Senior Midday Supervisor.
  8. To take part in regular training sessions as required.
