Job/Person Summary

Freemantle CE Community Academy is a two-form entry primary and maintained nursery, catering for pupils from 3 to 11 years. We are looking for an experienced teacher with a passion for supporting pupils with special educational needs to join our friendly and supportive team. Working closely with the leadership team, you'll use your leadership skills to manage SEND provision across the academy and to provide support to other staff. 

The successful candidate will be:

  • A qualified teacher with experience of working with children with special education needs
  • Ideally qualified or prepared to work towards the SENCo qualification
  • An effective team player with excellent communication skills
  • Someone who is able to use their own initiative and lead a small team effectively
  • Able to build strong relationships with pupils, staff and parents
  • A warm and caring individual who truly puts our children first

Key duties:

  • Help to develop and oversee the implementation of the school's SEND strategy and policy.
  • Carry out assessments of pupils with SEND to identify needs and monitor progress - including observations in the classroom and meeting with teachers and parents.
  • Work with classroom teachers, the school leadership team, parents and relevant external agencies to develop, implement and monitor individual support/learning plans.
  • Provide regular updates on pupil progress through written reports and meetings with parents.
  • Make referrals and liaise with professionals outside of the school - this could include psychologists, health and social care providers, speech and language therapists and occupational therapists.
  • Provide advice, guidance and training to classroom teachers on supporting pupils with SEND.
  • Support teachers to develop schemes of work and learning programmes for pupils with SEND.
  • Support teachers to develop and implement effective teaching and behaviour management approaches in the classroom.
  • Be instrumental in writing EHCP’s for children with complex SEND needs.
  • Provide supervision for staff where required.
  • Advise on the school budget and resources for SEND provision.

Qualifications and experience

  • Degree and Qualified Teacher Status 
  • National Award for SENCo qualification or similar
  • Experience of working with children with SEND

 

Skills and knowledge 

  • Excellent communication skills with both children and adults
  • A commitment and knowledge of how to provide the highest standards of provision for pupils with SEND
  • Knowledge of effective teaching and learning strategies
  • An experienced teacher who is committed to raising standards 
  • Ability to adapt teaching to meet pupils’ needs
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with pupils and staff
  • Knowledge of guidance and requirements around safeguarding children
  • Knowledge of effective behaviour management strategies
  • Good ICT skills, particularly using ICT to support learning
