Special Needs Assistant

Job Introduction

We have a vacancy for a Special Needs Assistant for between 25 and 30 hours per week. Previous experience of working with children is essential, preferably with those who have special educational needs relating to ASD, global developmental delay, and communication and interaction needs. Experience in a primary school setting is highly desirable.

 

Role profile 02030 Grade B. 

 

The successful candidate will be expected to: 

- Have a good understanding of ASD and / or global development delay and how this can  

  impact learning

- Manage a range of visual aids to enable access to learning and promote communication

- Maintain a high level of support for the child’s social, emotional and learning needs 

- Implement learning activities to enable the child to have access to the planned curriculum 

- Help the child to develop social skills and appropriate interactions with their peers 

- Have a good understanding of sensory and processing needs and a child centred approach   

  to co-regulating 

- Support the delivery of interventions to promote communication learning, social and  

   emotional wellbeing 

- Awareness of the PACE approach to interaction 

- Have high expectations of the pupil and be an advocate for their needs 

- Work closely with and be accountable to the class teacher, who will give guidance on the 

  nature and extent of the support and supervision 

- Meet regularly with the SENCO and contribute to the planning and reviewing of 

  personalised learning plans / annual reviews 

- Liaise with a range of professionals external to the school and implement their advice

- Develop a good relationship with other children in the class by encouraging and motivating 

- Follow all school policies 

- Treat all school matters as confidential 

- Attend appropriate inset / training opportunities 

 

Person Specification 

- Have a professional approach to all aspects of school life 

- Have excellent communication skills both written and verbal 

- Have appropriate levels of literacy and numeracy (GCSE grade C or above desirable) 

- Have a good understanding of how poor social and emotional wellbeing can affect learning  

  opportunities 

- Be able to work effectively as part of a team and show initiative 

- Be willing to learn and take the initiative to read up on the pupil’s needs 

- Have experience of working with infant / primary aged children in a primary school setting 

- Have a caring, cheerful and conscientious disposition 

- Show resilience and determination 

- Have the energy and enthusiasm to keep up with an energetic and active child
