Maths at Kings’

A large department of 16 specialist Maths teachers ranging from ECTs to teachers with 30+ years of experience. The team is led by a Head of Maths and two Key Stage leads. The team is passionate, collaborative and there is a real sense of comradery with a positive working environment.

Curriculum

We have a 2.5-year KS3 curriculum and a 2.5-year KS4 curriculum. Our KS3 curriculum has been made and developed “in-house” closely following the National Curriculum. The curriculum is based on a clear learning journey which has been sequenced thoughtfully under consultation, gaining special commendation from HIAS and Ofsted. It is a curriculum for all which is ambitious in its design and aims to close the gap between what is taught and what is learnt. This is supported by core success criteria and knowledge that are printed in the ‘Knowledge Organiser’.

For KS4, we follow the Edexcel curriculum which has been adapted to suit our length of curriculum, using the ActiveLearn software to create an innovative and resourced curriculum specifically designed to cater to our students with a real emphasis on the problem-solving skills needed to be successful at GCSE.

Teaching & Learning

We place a huge emphasis on growing great teachers within the Maths department at Kings’. We are a tight knit team who support each other and help each other grow. Our core lesson principles are aligned with Rosenshines Teaching Principles, with a real emphasis on modelling, “I, We, You”, and checking for understanding. We continue to grow and develop as a team and are ambitious in our consistency and ability to stretch pupils at all levels. Our lessons give all opportunities to be successful and to make progress.

The Maths Department Vision

“To ensure high quality Maths lessons are taught every single lesson”.

The aim of the Kings’ School Maths Curriculum is to help pupils acquire knowledge and skills, reason mathematically and apply those skills and reasoning techniques to solve problems.

We understand that a Mathematics curriculum is important in preparing students for life after school and as staff we are passionate in increasing engagement in Maths lessons and fostering a love for Maths beyond the classroom.
