Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion from September 2025

Job Introduction

We have a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced SENCo who is really passionate about inclusion to join the Senior Leadership Team of our large, successful junior school in September. Our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion makes a significant contribution to our team, leading provision for children with additional needs, working closely with staff, parents and carers.

Are you an experienced SENCo?

Do you aspire to work strategically and operationally to embed high quality inclusive provision?

Our large staff structure enables us to clearly define roles and responsibilities within our team. Our Senior Leadership Team includes a non-teaching Headteacher and Deputy, a non-teaching Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion and an Assistant Headteacher for Curriculum who teaches part-time. In addition, our Leadership Team includes four Year Leaders, each leading the teachers and LSAs in their own team of four classes.

Our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion role combines strategic responsibilities with the operational leadership of our inclusive ethos. The role is non-teaching enabling our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion to focus on building relationships, identifying needs and working both pro-actively and in response to self-evaluation evidence to promote learning success for children with a range of additional needs: Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), those for whom the Pupil Premium (PP) applies, Looked After Children (LAC), children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and those with short or long-term pastoral needs such as children who benefit from Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) provision and values coaching.

Our vacancy would suit an experienced SENCo who is looking to build their senior leadership skills. Due to the size of our school, our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion holds responsibility for a large department with the valuable resource of staff to deploy and professional experts to engage, as well as digital and physical resources to procure and implement. We are looking for someone who has the professional knowledge and experience to make effective and creative use of our resources to promote learning success for all children with additional needs in our school.

We believe that our staff team are our most valuable resource and prioritise providing effective support and encouragement to every member of our team as they develop in their role over time. New members of our team benefit from a comprehensive induction programme and regular professional development opportunities, exemplified by our support for leaders in their completion of NPQML and NPQSL qualifications.

As a school, we are extremely proud of our successes in setting high expectations and developing the whole child through our strong Christian ethos. Our dedicated staff work together as a strong team enabling both children and staff to flourish.

At Horndean Church of England Junior School we strive to provide each and every one of the five hundred children in our care with a first-class education. We are an inclusive school and our Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion works pro-actively, with the support of staff at all levels, to make a difference for children with a range of additional needs.

With the ever-changing educational landscape, we aim to be adaptable and we are proud of our successes and the effectiveness of our school improvement work which has been recognised by the Local Authority. In April 2022 we secured a very positive outcome from our short Ofsted inspection, not least the judgement that our Christian Values of TLC ‘help to make the school a very special place.’ This echoed the outcome of our church school inspection in November 2019 that our Christian vision ‘successfully drives the school’s development and has an exceptional impact on the lives of pupils and adults.’
