Job Introduction
Are you highly organised, detail-oriented, and looking for a flexible role that makes a real difference in the local community?
Our Governing Board is seeking a reliable and professional Clerk to the Governors to join our team. In this vital role, you will be the backbone of our school’s governance, ensuring our board operates efficiently, legally, and effectively to support our pupils’ education.
As our Clerk to Governors, your responsibilities will span three key areas: administration, advisory, and membership management. You will work closely with the Chair of Governors and the Headteacher to keep our governance processes running smoothly.
- Meeting Administration: Prepare and distribute agendas, collate meeting papers, attend meetings to take accurate, objective minutes, and track follow-up actions.
- Advisory Support: Provide independent advice on constitutional, legislative, and procedural duties, ensuring the board operates in line with Department for Education (DfE) guidelines.
- Compliance & Record-keeping: Maintain up-to-date governor records (including terms of office, training, and the Register of Pecuniary Interests) and ensure our statutory policies are updated regularly.
Working Hours Note: Governor meetings are primarily held in the evenings (usually 9 times a year, starting at 6:00 PM). Aside from attending these scheduled meetings, the administrative work is highly flexible and can easily be completed from home.
What We Are Looking For
You do not necessarily need prior school clerking experience—we will provide full training for the right candidate. However, you must possess:
- Exceptional organisational and administrative skills with a keen eye for detail.
- Excellent written English, with the ability to take concise, accurate minutes from complex discussions.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to build trusted relationships with the Headteacher and governors.
- Discretion and confidentiality, as you will handle sensitive personal and school data.
- Confidence with technology, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and virtual meeting platforms like Teams/Zoom.
- An existing qualification (e.g., NGA Certificate in School Governance Profession) is desirable but not essential.
What We Offer
- True flexibility: Blend remote working with evening meeting attendance to suit your lifestyle.
- Professional development: Fully funded access to National Governance Association (NGA) training and local authority clerk networks.
- A supportive community: Join a dedicated, welcoming team of staff and volunteer governors.
- Salary will be paid as Grade D between £14.40 and £15.84 an hour depending on experience.
