Job/Person Summary

Fixed Term Contract until August 2026, with view to a Permanent Position

Horndean Infant School is a three form entry school. We have an exciting opportunity for someone to work with pupils in Year R who need support with social and emotional needs. Previous experience of working with children with special educational needs is desirable. The successful person will have high expectations for pupil’s learning and behaviour and will assist with the pupil’s integration and participation within the classroom. You must be willing to undertake specific training. The position is available as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Maintain a high level of support for the child(ren)'s needs
  • Implement learning activities to enable the child(ren) to have access to the planned curriculum
  • Help the child(ren) to develop social skills and facilitate interactions with their peers
  • Have a willingness to learn new skills
  • Be cheerful, flexible and approachable
  • Be able to demonstrate excellent communication skills and to work as part of a team.
  • Be able to work independently and with initiative
  • Have high expectations of achievement and behaviour for all children 
  • Have the ability to support the development of the child(ren)’s social and self-help skills
  • Use a variety of positive behaviour management strategies
  • Work closely with and be accountable to the class teacher, who will give guidance on the nature and extent of the support and supervision
  • Have a good understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding practices
  • Plan and review regularly with the class teacher
  • Meet regularly with the SEN co-ordinator and contribute to Individual Support Plans

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has a professional approach to all aspects of school life
  • Possesses excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Has appropriate levels of literacy and numeracy
  • Is able to work effectively as part of a successful team and show initiative
  • Desirably has experience of working with primary aged children, especially those with Autism
  • Has a caring, cheerful and conscientious disposition
  • Shows resilience and determination
  • Has a good sense of humour
