The Mountbatten School English Faculty is committed to helping all students become happy, confident, curious and knowledgeable learners. Our well-resourced library is central to this mission, providing a vibrant space where students can explore texts, discover new interests and develop a lifelong love of reading. Working closely with the English and Media Studies departments, the School Librarian plays a key role in supporting literacy for all students across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the day-to-day running of a busy, welcoming school library.
- Maintain excellent organisation and presentation of library resources, stock and displays.
- Promote a culture of reading for pleasure and academic success through regular engagement with students and staff.
- Manage student use of the library during break and lunch times, ensuring the environment is purposeful, inclusive and well-supervised.
- Deliver reading intervention to small groups of targeted students to support the whole school literacy priorities.
- Plan, support and supervise extracurricular library clubs, including Book Club, Board Game Club and KS4 Revision Club.
- Assist students in locating, selecting and using a range of fiction, non-fiction and digital resources effectively.
- Liaise with English teachers to support curriculum reading, GCSE study and enrichment projects.
- Oversee borrowing systems, record-keeping and resource circulation; manage overdue loans.
- Develop displays, reading schemes and initiatives that encourage student participation.
- Support staff in booking and accessing library spaces, laptops and equipment.
Person Specification
- Enthusiasm for reading and literacy, with a desire to inspire young people.
- Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team.
- Confidence supervising students in a busy environment and building positive relationships.
- Experience working with young people in a school or educational setting is desirable.
- Strong ICT skills; willingness to learn school systems and cataloguing tools.
