Practical Lesson Cover Supervisor (with the opportunity to be an also Co-tutor)

Required from 13 April 2026

Core school hours are 8.20am – 2.45pm however we understand that everyone has different commitments and support staff to manage a good work/life balance. This means that we are open to discussions around working patterns and hours

Grade D: (£27,780 FTE) if working 30 Hours a week, term time only, Actual Salary £19,267

Brookfield is evolving the way we provide lesson cover and are seeking enthusiastic, reliable individuals to join our school community as part of a strong and supportive team.

This role will be primarily aligned with our subjects that are more practical, PE, dance, drama and technology subject areas — enabling you to build relationships within those teams, develop familiarity with schemes of work, and gain confidence with subject-specific resources — but you will also provide lesson cover across other areas of the school as required.

This approach offers the best of both worlds: a clear departmental home and sense of belonging, alongside the variety and flexibility that comes with supporting the wider school. In addition to supervising lessons during staff absence, you will contribute to student support, in-class support within your linked department and, where needed, across the school.

Why this role could be right for you

  • Graduates or career changers exploring teaching as a future pathway
  • Individuals currently feeling bored or unfulfilled in their role and looking for meaningful work
  • Those who enjoy working with young people and being part of a vibrant community
  • Many Cover Supervisors use this role as a stepping stone into teacher training, and we actively support colleagues with applications, references and experience-building opportunities.

What you’ll be doing

  • Work closely with the specified departments, supervising whole classes during teacher absence using prepared lesson materials and working with class teacher to support students in classes at other times
  • The opportunity, if you wish, to co-tutor one of our personal development groups, led by an experienced teacher you will take a tutor group for part of the week. This is an excellent opportunity to build relationships with the students and become part of the school community
  • Helping out to supervise study booths and the supervision room as well as providing support for our students with SEN needs.
  • Supporting students to stay focused, engaged and on task
  • Building positive relationships with students and staff
  • Being a visible, valued part of the wider school community
  • There will be times when we need you to help out in other areas when absence is particularly high but you will predominantly be working within your own departments.

Previous experience working with young people is desirable but not required — we are far more interested in your attitude, reliability and willingness to learn.

Training and support

You will not be expected to “sink or swim”.

We offer:

  • A structured induction programme in your first weeks
  • Ongoing training in classroom management and behaviour strategies
  • Opportunities to observe teaching and attend teaching and learning sessions
  • Support from experienced staff and senior leaders

What we’re looking for

  • A positive, calm and confident approach
  • An interest in young people and education
  • Good communication skills and professionalism
  • A desire to develop and grow in the role

In return, we offer a welcoming team, excellent support, and a role where no two days are the same — and where you can see the impact of your work every day.
