St Peter’s Catholic Primary School in Waterlooville is seeking an enthusiastic, committed and passionate librarian to join the school from September 2026. The ideal candidate for the post of school librarian will be approachable and friendly. A welcoming nature is ideal and a knowledge of the different genres of books is important. This is a position with high standards and expectations, requiring stamina, enthusiasm and creativity.
The role involves:
- Encouraging pupils to read for pleasure
- Making the library look inviting and welcoming
- Reading stories to class groups of children from Reception to Year 6
- Keeping correct records and data
- Maintaining and updating display boards and monthly reading leader boards
- Regular stock rotation of curriculum books and class book corners
- Contributing to the monthly school newsletter.
- Allocating Junior Librarian positions and showing them how to fulfil the role
- General library duties
- Attending Hampshire School Library Service network meetings.
As well as the above, the role involves a creative approach to arranging/co-ordinating author visits; after school reading events; Book Clubs; Book awards (in conjunction with the School Library Service); taking a lead in World Book Day and Reading Challenges etc.
Applicants will:
- Possess good organisational skills
- Be self-motivated and able to plan their own work
- Have a great knowledge of children’s books and preferably some experience in a library
- Enjoy working with children
- Be friendly and welcoming
- Have good computer skills
- Have a minimum of Grade C at GCSE English and Maths or equivalent qualification
The job is part time term time only (includes INSET days) and is for 20 hours a week. The current working pattern is Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 12:00 - 4:00pm and Weds 8:30am to 4:00pm
