Teaching Assistant

Job Introduction

TITLE: Teaching Assistant with Lunchtime.

RESPONSIBILITIES TO INCLUDE AS FOLLOWS:

PART 1

You will be required to work closely with the Special Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) and help her in any appropriate aspect of her job; this includes administrative tasks, audit preparation, liaising with outside agencies and parents. 

All personnel are expected to participate fully in the life of the school and reflect its strong sense of mission.

The day to day demands of the school are wide and variable; therefore all members of staff must be prepared to undertake any tasks as requested by the Head of School.   In this respect all members of staff are expected to share playground duties, care for sick, incontinent or similar children and be willing to accept responsibilities for all groups within the school.

Holidays may only be taken during school holiday periods and individuals must be available for work on occasional day closures.

Under no circumstances may anyone physically punish a child.  Discipline will be administered within the context of the school policy.

Under no circumstances will anyone discuss with parents or others, a pupil’s progress or behaviour unless requested by the Headteacher or Intervention Consultant.   Confidentiality is of the utmost importance.

 

PART 2

Teaching Assistant:

  • promote the Catholic ethos of the school
  • work in partnership with classroom teachers as designated by the SENCO as follows:
  • understanding of task – organisation, presentation, etc
  • developing concentration and study skill
  • developing basic literacy, numeracy and social skills as necessary
  • developing motor co-ordination skill;        handwriting, pencil control, etc
  • liaise with class teacher
  • keep records
  • work collaboratively as part of a team
  • help monitor the pupils’ response to tasks set and contribute to class records
  • to assist and support children with special needs as required: this may include children with learning, behavioural, physical, social or other difficulties
  • supervising and assisting small groups of   pupils in activities set by teachers
  • supervising and assisting small groups of pupils in activities set by teachers in off-site activities
  • consistently and fairly implementing behaviour management policies
  • spotting early signs related to child protection or bullying and supporting children to raise their self-esteem
  • helping the inclusion of all children
  • keeping children on task
  • assisting pupils in educational tasks
  • freeing up the teacher by working with small groups against plans produced by the teacher
  • assisting pupils with physical needs (including medical and welfare requirements)
  • supervising and assisting small groups of pupils in activities set by teachers in off-site activities on residential visits

The school does not make a distinction between those members of staff working 1:1 with pupils, working in small groups or working within a class setting. The role of learning support assistant can include some or all of these roles as an expectation.

 

PART 3

Lunchtime:

Setting up the Dinner Halls

Set up tables in pairs with another colleague

  • Set  out chairs
  • Ensure environment is safe
  • Set up area to receive and rinse dirty plates and cutlery

Supervision in Lunch Halls

  • Start promptly 
  • Collect pupils from playgrounds
  • Ensure children line up safely
  • Ensure that children sit at tables properly to eat
  • Encourage children / pupils to eat their lunch
  • Encourage children/pupils to use their knife & fork correctly
  • Encourage good manners when eating
  • Monitor behaviour

Supervision on Playground 

You should be able to:

  • To  interact with the children and teach specific playground games
  • To deal with matters relating to pupil discipline in a fair and non-threatening manner based on the School’s Behaviour Policy.
  • To liaise with teachers / LSAs about individual children’s needs, PLTs, behaviour strategies etc.
  • To be aware of relevant procedures to be followed in the event of an accident or dangerous occurrence or fire and to ensure procedures are carried out properly.
  • To record any serious incidents in the Accident Book
  • To adhere to key policies e.g. Child Protection, Physical Restraint, Health & Safety, Behaviour Management
  • To be empathetic with children and sympathetic to their needs
  • To demonstrate good communication skills and able to clarify and explain instructions clearly
  • To use firm, sensitive and effective approach towards discipline
  • To apply knowledge and skills from training and where necessary, spread techniques and expertise to other staff
  • To establish and maintain good relationships and rapport with other colleagues in the school 
  • To be able to motivate and encourage children appropriately
  • To be able to work independently and with initiative
  • To be professionally discrete and able to respect confidentiality on particular issues
  • T teach simple playground games

 Supervision at Wet Lunchtimes

 

  • As above but in the classrooms

 

Clearing up After Lunch

 

  • Clear  away tables with another colleague
  • Clear away chairs 
  • Mop floors and make sure environment is safe

 

Employee Note:

All employees have a new legal entitlement to take unpaid time off to deal with incidents involving employees' dependents. A dependent is defined as:

  • a spouse; 
  • a child; 
  • a parent; 

A dependent is also any person who reasonably relies on the employee for assistance on an occasion when the person falls ill or is injured or assaulted, or to make arrangements for the provision of care in the event of illness or injury. This will include, for example, elderly relatives not living in the same household but reliant on the employee to assist them in the event of illness or injury.

No qualifying period of service is required, and all employees will have the right to time off. Time off should be requested in letter to the Chair of Directors.

No other Leave of Absence will be authorised unless it is an exceptional circumstance and adequate cover is found by the class teacher.
