Apprentice Site Assistant - UTC Portsmouth

Job Introduction

UTC Portsmouth is seeking an Apprentice Site & Facilities Assistant to join our Premises team. This is a developmental role, for someone who wants to build a career in facilities and estates management while working towards a Level 4 Facilities Manager Apprenticeship.

As the Apprentice Site & Facilities Assistant, you will gain hands-on experience of how a modern STEM college operates day-to-day, learning about site operations, maintenance, health and safety, and compliance. The role is closely supported and supervised throughout the apprenticeship and does not carry overall responsibility for site safety or statutory compliance.

Under the guidance of the Premises Manager, you will:

  • Support the day-to-day upkeep of the school site, buildings, and grounds

  • Assist with routine site checks (e.g. fire alarms, emergency lighting, water hygiene)

  • Help prepare rooms for exams, events, and meetings

  • Shadow contractor visits and learn how site permits and supervision work

  • Assist with minor repairs and maintenance tasks

  • Learn how planned preventative maintenance (PPM) is scheduled and recorded

  • Support sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives

  • Take part in emergency procedures and drills as part of your learning

  • Maintain accurate records and logs

Apprenticeship training includes:

  • Level 4 Facilities Manager Apprenticeship (Mercury Training)

  • Protected off-the-job training time (minimum 6 hours per week)

  • Dedicated workplace mentor

  • Formal reviews every 8 weeks

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Has a genuine interest in facilities, premises, or estates work

  • Is committed to learning and completing an apprenticeship

  • Is reliable, punctual, and professional

  • Works well as part of a team

  • Is confident using basic IT systems (email, online forms)

  • Has some experience in maintenance, caretaking, or practical work

  • Has basic DIY skills

  • Has an awareness of health and safety principles
