Cover Supervisor

Job Introduction

Required as soon as possible or for September 2026

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Mountbatten School is seeking a calm, confident and dedicated individual to join our support staff team as a Cover Supervisor. This is a varied and rewarding role that sits at the heart of our school's daily operations, and an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful experience in a busy secondary school setting.

You will supervise whole classes of students during the short-term absence of their class teacher, delivering pre-prepared work and maintaining the high standards of behaviour and conduct that we expect from all our students. The role also includes lunchtime supervision of students, invigilation of internal and external examinations, and administrative support to faculties when cover is not required.

You will not be required to plan lessons, mark work or assess student progress — these responsibilities remain with the qualified teacher. Your focus will be on keeping students safe, engaged and on task, and on fostering a positive learning environment in every lesson you supervise.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You will need:

  • GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade C / Grade 4 or above (or equivalent)
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to manage a classroom calmly and fairly
  • The ability to build positive, professional relationships with young people
  • Resilience, patience and the ability to remain composed under pressure
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • A genuine commitment to the welfare, inclusion and progress of young people

It would be an advantage, though not essential, if you also have:

  • Previous experience of working with children or young people in any context (e.g. school, sport, youth work, volunteering)
  • A Level 3 qualification or equivalent
  • Experience supporting students with SEND

WHAT WE OFFER

The Mountbatten School recognises the value of investing in our staff. All employees benefit from:

  • Local Government Pension Scheme
  • Annual Flu Jab refund
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Assistance towards eye tests and glasses
  • Free parking for all staff
  • Vivup Benefits (lifestyle, home, electronics savings and cycle to work)
  • Free use of the Fitness Suite
  • Free 24-hour confidential telephone counselling service

SAFEGUARDING

The Mountbatten School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. We expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All posts are subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and other pre-employment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE). References will be taken up before interview for shortlisted candidates.

We are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where all staff are valued and supported.
