Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)

Job Introduction

We are seeking to appoint an ELSA to join our friendly team from September 2026. This is a permanent position.  

The successful candidate will work closely with the other members of our pastoral support team, supporting individuals and small groups who require intervention for social, emotional or mental health difficulties. They will liaise closely with other classroom staff to ensure that strategies and programmes are followed up within the classroom environment, and the impact is measured. 

 

We particularly welcome applications from qualified ELSAs, but also those with significant experience supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs in primary schools who are willing to undertake the training. 

 

This is a term-time only contract (INSET days included). There is some flexibility regarding the hours for this role, which could be worked across 3 - 5 days, incorporating the afternoons. The position is for up to 15hrs per week with the potential for additional hours or a dual role according to the school’s needs/candidate experience (up to a max of 30hrs per week - please see job details for more information).

 

The successful candidate will

  • have a range of experience within primary schools, including KS2;
  • have knowledge and experience of delivering interventions with pupils to support their social, emotional and mental health needs;
  • have a good understanding of child development and learning;
  • be a good team player;
  • demonstrate effective communication skills, with adults and children;
  • be able to promote positive behaviour;
  • be flexible, enthusiastic, reliable and hard-working;
  • enjoy working with children, and be able to support the school in the safeguarding of pupils.
