Job Introduction

Teacher of English – MPR/UPR

September 2026 Start (or earlier)

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and dedicated Teacher of English with a genuine passion for the subject to join our secondary site, teaching pupils aged 11–16. This is an excellent opportunity to join a high performing, collaborative, and well-resourced department that values shared planning, professional dialogue, and manageable workload.

Alderwood Senior School is a rapidly improving and high performing school, producing GCSE results above national average. Behaviour across the school is very good, with Ofsted describing it as ‘very settled and calm.’

This position would suit an ECT or a more experienced practitioner.

Our English Department:

  • enjoys a designated classroom for each teacher
  • benefits from weekly shared planning time during the school day
  • provides fully resourced units of work for teachers to adapt - there is no starting from scratch here
  • has a more generous contact ratio than the national average
  • takes a sensible, sustainable approach to marking and provides support during mock exam marking periods to help manage workload
  • is at the forefront of developments in the teaching of reading in secondary schools
  • is staffed by subject specialists
  • works closely with our full-time Librarian/Learning Resource Centre Manager
  • is equipped with new, large interactive whiteboards in every English classroom

Outcomes for our pupils have improved significantly in recent years and the department continues to build strong momentum. We are ambitious for the next stage of our development and would be delighted to welcome a colleague who wants to join us for the next steps of our exciting journey.

Alderwood is an all-through 4–16 school based across three sites, offering a range of opportunities for collaboration and professional development.

We welcome potential applicants to visit the school. For an application form, please visit our website: www.alderwood.hants.sch.uk. If you wish to visit the school prior to submitting an application, please contact Miss G Yates, PA to the Executive Headteacher, at g.yates@alderwood.hants.sch.uk, to arrange an appointment.

Closing date: 12 noon, Friday 10th April 2026
