We are looking for a highly motivated and dedicated Caretaker to join our happy and hardworking team, helping to ensure that our school remains a safe, clean and inspiring place to learn.

Maintaining an excellent health and safety culture is a priority for everyone in our school community. Our new Caretaker will ideally have a good understanding of health and safety requirements and regulations and be committed to working with Hampshire Caretaking Services to ensure the school continues to meet the highest standards.

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the work of our third-party contract cleaners and carrying out minor repairs and routine maintenance around the school site. They will also play a key role in ensuring the overall safety and security of the premises, including the daily unlocking and locking of the site, liaising with contractors, and working closely with staff to provide practical support across the school.

We are looking for someone who takes genuine pride in their work and is committed to maintaining a welcoming, safe and attractive environment for our children, staff, families and visitors. The successful candidate will be reliable, proactive, well organised and able to work independently while also being an effective member of the school team. A flexible approach, good communication skills and a willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school are essential.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Overseeing the security of the site and be a key holder, including daily opening and closing of the school
  • Managing and carrying out general maintenance, repairs and improvements
  • Monitoring and maintaining heating, lighting and alarm systems
  • Ensuring the site complies with health and safety requirements and Hampshire County Council policies
  • Managing contractors on site and overseeing planned maintenance schedules
  • Conducting regular site inspections and maintaining accurate records
  • Supervising cleaning staff and ensuring high standards of cleanliness across the school 
  • Ordering maintenance supplies and managing the premises budget responsibly
  • Supporting the smooth running of school events and activities when required
  • Working alongside staff to complete all health and safety risk assessments

  • Be an excellent communicator, able to build positive relationships with staff, contractors and the wider school community.
  • Be approachable, professional and committed to supporting the school's values.
  • Be willing to undertake relevant training and professional development.
  • Demonstrate good IT skills, including confidence using email and basic computer applications.
  • Work flexibly to meet the changing needs of the school.
  • Maintain the highest levels of confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Have strong commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, with comprehensive safeguarding training and support provided.

The Successful Applicant Will:

  • Be a committed team player and an active member of the school community.
  • Lead and oversee the cleaning team, ensuring high standards of cleanliness throughout the site.
  • Help manage the school site, grounds and buildings to the highest possible standard.
  • Take responsibility for site security, including acting as a key holder.
  • Carry out a broad range of maintenance, repairs and routine inspections.
  • Demonstrate initiative, strong organisational skills and effective time management.
  • Contribute to the smooth day-to-day operation of the school by responding promptly to maintenance and site-related issues.
  • Ensure the school remains safe, secure, clean and operational at all times.

Previous experience in a similar role, or a good understanding of building maintenance, compliance, and site management, would be an advantage but is not essential. We welcome applications from candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to learn.
