As Second in English, you will:
- Teach across KS3 and KS4

Overview
A highly effective and inspirational Second in English will support Brighton Hill Community School and our rapidly growing, coeducational 11-16 community school with over 1270 students, rated as ‘Good’ with Outstanding in three of the four Ofsted categories. The second in English will teach across KS3 and KS4 as a member of the English Faculty and contribute to our vision of making success inevitable for all.
Core Purpose
The Second in English will focus on the Quality of Education across the English Faculty (English Literature, English Language, and Media Studies). Working closely with the Head of Faculty, you will help articulate a clear vision for the faculty, raise academic standards, enable students’ personal and social development, and inspire both students and staff.
Main Responsibilities
- Support and deputies for the Head of Faculty as required
- Monitor the quality of assessment and feedback, particularly at Key Stage 3
- Prepare and develop relevant sections of the English Faculty Improvement Plan (FIP)
- Lead on development, monitoring and review of curriculum and schemes of learning, especially at KS3
- Monitor home learning policy and practice within the team
- Organise the English Faculty’s extra-curricular offer and enrichment activities
- Conduct student voice meetings to inform curriculum changes
- Work with SENCO and support staff to ensure effective support for students with SEND
- Identify and support students making below expected progress, developing catch-up strategies, and completing data reviews
- Oversee relevant sections of the school’s performance management process within the faculty
- Support the Head of Faculty with:
- Delivering and monitoring teaching & learning, and progress across the faculty
- Organising timetables, student groupings, and staff allocations
- Supervising staff within the faculty (including trainees, ECTs, supply, and cover)
- Monitoring student conduct across the English Faculty
- Analysing school data against local and national statistics
- Ensuring assessment and progress records are up to date
- Assisting with staff appointments
- Delegating responsibilities within the subject team
- Providing advice, welfare, and support for faculty staff
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Evidence of relevant professional development
- Successful teaching experience at KS3 and KS4
Experience
- Experience of teaching English across KS3 and KS4
- Evidence of leading or contributing to curriculum development
- Experience in supporting or mentoring colleagues is desirable
Skills and Knowledge
- Excellent knowledge of curriculum requirements for English
- Ability to inspire and motivate students and staff
- Outstanding classroom practice and positive approach
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- Ability to analyse data and implement improvement strategies
- Understanding of effective assessment and feedback
- Knowledge of SEND and strategies to support diverse learners
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
